What are Back Facials and Why Should You Get One?

July 21, 2021
back facial

By now, everyone seems to have a skincare routine down. But what about the skin you can’t see? Back facials may seem like a new trend, but consider how much pampering you give the rest of your body. Your back skin deserves just as much care as the rest of you, and this is one area that you probably need a little help to tend to.

What is a back facial?

Similar to the more common face-facial, a back facial is a series of treatments that opens pores, extracts impurities, and leaves the skin soft, moisturized, and refreshed. Steam is used to open the pores and prep the skin for cleansing and exfoliation. From there, the esthetician will assess the client’s skin and determine what treatments will bring your best back forward.

If there is acne or clogged pores, the esthetician will perform extractions to safely remove the offending spots and help your skin clear up. On the other hand, dry skin will receive extra hydration through masques, serums, and oil-free moisturizers.

What is Dry Brushing and Why Is It Good for You?

June 23, 2021
dry brushes

While dry brushing may be new to most of us, this ancient practice, also known as garshana (pronounced gar-shun-uh), has been an integral part of ayurvedic medicine for centuries. With celebrities jumping on the bandwagon, the internet is abuzz with the myriad benefits of dry brushing. But is all the hype about body brushing worth your time, money, and effort? Well, depending on what you hope to gain from it, the answer could be a resounding yes. Ahead we’ll take a closer look at dry brushing and why it’s good for you, and share some best practices to help you get the most out of it.

WHAT IS DRY BRUSHING?

Just as its name implies, dry brushing (or body brushing) is the practice of gently massaging the coarse natural bristles of a brush all over your body, usually in an upward motion. Of late, it would seem that dry brushing has become increasingly popular because it can help detoxify the body and restore the natural glow to dull, flaky skin. It probably doesn’t hurt either that dry brushing also has the celebrity stamp of approval, with Gweneth Paltrow and Miranda Kerr singing its praises.

BENEFITS OF DRY BRUSHING

It may be important to note that there are plenty of claims surrounding the practice of body brushing. Its advocates swear by the practice for help with everything from a reduction in the appearance of cellulite to weight loss, but there is relatively little scientific evidence to back up such claims. But while the perceived benefits of body brushing are largely anecdotal, there are some real benefits to be had.

EXFOLIATION

Dry brushes are great physical exfoliators. The process effectively removes dead skin cells to reveal brighter, healthier, more radiant skin.

STIMULATES CIRCULATION AND HELPS WITH LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

Just like a massage, body brushing can stimulate your circulation, encourage lymphatic drainage, and help detoxify your body. So much, so that dry brushing is offered as an enhancement for massage services at Milk + Honey, you may want to consult with your esthetician about it when booking an appointment.

UNCLOGS PORES

As body brushing exfoliates the skin, it also clears out dirt, oil, and residue from your pores. Not only does dry brushing unclog your pores, but the cleanup can make them look smaller or at least less noticeable.

NATURAL ENERGY BOOST

Dry brushing tends to leave some folks with a natural energy boost of sorts. This is likely a bi-product of the stimulation in circulation and blood flow.

A MOMENT OF SELF-CARE

Again, just like a massage, body brushing offers its practitioners a mindful moment of self-care in an otherwise busy life.

HOW TO SELECT A DRY BRUSH

Like most beauty products, the qualities of a good dry brush can be pretty subjective. While you need a dry brush with firm bristles, be sure to choose one that’s not too abrasive. Very often, users may find that synthetic bristles are too abrasive, while natural boar bristles are more comfortable. Also, handles can be an important factor for dry brushing. Long-handle dry brushes can help you get to hard-to-reach spots with ease, while dry brushes with no handle tend to offer more control. Milk + Honey’s body brush kind of splits the difference with a medium-length handle, so essentially, you get the best of both worlds.

BODY BRUSHING: BEST PRACTICES

Believe it or not, there is a wrong way to dry brush your skin. To help you get the most out of body brushing, here are a few best practices:

  • Make sure that the brush and your skin are completely dry
  • Don’t scrub too hard; use slightly firm pressure
  • Start at your ankles and work your way up towards your heart
  • Brush only in a circular motion
  • Follow up with a soothing moisturizer

4 Steps to a Top-Notch Massage

October 26, 2017

We know what you’re thinking. What could possibly make a massage even better? We have the answer: a massage with enhancements. Each enhancement will take your massage to the next level by addressing a specific intention.

If you’re on the go:

Our back scrub or foot scrub doesn’t add much time to your reservation, but it makes the experience extra special. The added exfoliation is also great for circulation and removing dead skin.

If you’re feeling adventurous:

We recommend giving Body Brushing a try. It feels interesting and invigorating. The process helps to prevent cellulite, stimulate circulation, and lymphatic drainage. The best part? You keep the brush and take it home with you. Dry brushing at home can become a simulating ritual, similar to drinking a cup of coffee in the morning.

If you’re trying to beat the cold, winter months:

Our Warm Oil Scalp and Neck massage is the perfect wintertime treat. This enhancement adds an extra 15 minutes to your experience, as your therapist drizzles warm oil down your head and neck before performing a scalp massage.  Make sure you have time to enjoy the steam shower after this enhancement. This icing on the cake with this enhancement: the oils are incredibly hydrating for your hair.

If you want the ultimate “treat yourself” experience:

The Ultimate Massage package includes full body brushing, a 90-minute massage, as well as the Warm Oil Scalp and Neck massage. It’s just as luxurious as it sounds–we promise.

Still curious about our enhancements?

Style Guide: 5 Styles Explained

October 25, 2017

Our team of licensed massage therapists is incredibly talented and well-rounded. We always recommend asking your therapist what they specialize in–you never know what interesting skills they bring to the table. When it comes to massage styles, it can be intimidating to know where to start. That’s why we’re starting with the basics. Read on for five common styles explained, debunked, and broken down.

Signature (Swedish)

Let’s start with the basics. Swedish massages are relaxation-based and focus on tension relief. Think flowy, longer stokes. This style will also be customized to your pressure preferences. The goal of Swedish massage is to set your body to homeostasis a.k.a. your body’s center, home base.

Deep Tissue

For more focused, therapeutic work, ask your therapist about Deep Tissue. You might benefit from this style if you have concentrated, specific issues you’d like to remedy. A common misconception about Deep Tissue is that the style must be very firm and intense. In fact, our therapists can use the therapeutic benefits of Deep Tissue without using hard or firm pressure.

Reiki

Have you ever woken up on the wrong side of the bed? Ever walk away from a situation just feeling kinda bleh?  Do you ever feel an ominous weirdness you just can’t shake? That’s how you know it’s time to try Reiki. It’s a type of subtle therapy using light touch that can help with insomnia, anxiety, digestive issues, relaxation, and even PTSD. It activates your chakras (or energy centers) to help calibrate your energetic field. Science has shown we all have electromagnetic fields around us, and a Reiki therapist can help realign your said field.

At milk + honey, there is still massage incorporated – its partially Signature Massage and partially Reiki. You can even customize the ratio to your preference.

Note that only select therapists offer Reiki. Please call ahead or email [email protected] for more info.

Pre-Natal

At milk + honey, we only offer Pre-Natal Massage after your first trimester. We offer a unique bolstering system that can be adjusted to your baby bump to allow the prone position (lying on your stomach.) Of course, you can always lie on your side if that better suits your comfort level. We offer a cold pack during the massage and touching of the abdomen is optional.

Sports Massage

Ready to stretch? Sports Massages lengthen tissues and change fascia. They’re great for pre or post-workout, of course. If you’re active, training for a marathon or 5k, or working through a sports injury, this is your go-to. Don’t be fooled, though — this massage is really for anyone looking to increase flexibility. If you sit at a desk all day, this style would also be helpful for you.

Take it home:

Looking to relieve and relax your muscles, but can’t make it into the spa? Here are two at-home steps you can take. First, try our Muscle Soak, formulated with Eucalyptus, Arnica, Rosemary, Sweet Marjoram to soothe aches and pains. Next, follow up with a small amount of our powerful Arnica Balm to soothe targeted muscles and joints. Not as good as a massage, but a close second best.

Still unsure? That’s okay.

“milk + honey is unique because the consultation process allows us to identify what the you need. Book the time and know that your therapist is going to guide you.”
