Matt, you make a great point. It is hard to convince clients massage is more than pampering. I feel like half of my clients go “the spa way” and the other half want “elbows up the erectors” because their shoulders hurt. I think, off the top of my head, one in four come for general wellness. How do you convince your clients massage is an important part of health care?

I agree with Kate. “Melting” into the trigger point has worked far better for me than the “grinding” my clients have seem to come to expect from a massage therapist. (I cannot tell you how many clients I’ve heard say, “If it hurts, it must be working.” I didn’t get into this business to hurt people!) I also find that stretching the area, if possible, even fascially, then returning to the “knot” really helps. Glad someone is writing about this!

Matt, your description of a “knor” is very well done. I have taken to refering to them as “congested places” because I feel that it gives a more accurate visual of what’s going on in the tissues. I have found that using lighter pressure and then sinking in slowly (as one would a Shiatsu point) as the tissues become receptive and open to the pressure is the most effective way to address them.

I personally have worked with Courtney on many jobs, and she has always been the most intuitive artist I have seen. In my mind there is no other make up artist other than Courtney Woodhead. I’m sad to see her leave Omaha, but I hope she can bring as much beauty to Austin as she did here.
