Dysport FAQs

What is Dysport?

Dysport is an FDA-approved neurotoxin injectable, also utilized for its efficacy in reducing the appearance of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and lines without changing the look or movement in the rest of your face.

How does Dysport work?

Neuromodulators including Dysport, Botox, and Xeomin work by relaxing muscles to limit their movement around the injection site. When Dysport is injected under the skin, the muscles relax and the overlying skin becomes smoother which reduces the appearance of facial creases and wrinkles.

Not only does Dysport reduce the presence of existing wrinkles, but by relaxing the muscles you limit further facial muscle movements which helps to prevent new wrinkles from forming.

What areas/concerns does Dysport address?

Much like other neuromodulators, Dysport is primarily used to reduce the presence of facial wrinkles. Specifically, Dysport can improve the look of:

  • Moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines)
  • Moderate to severe crow’s feet lines
  • Moderate to severe forehead lines
  • You may receive Dysport treatment for frown lines, crow’s feet lines, and forehead lines at the same time

What should I expect during a Dysport treatment?

During the consultation with your provider, you will discuss concerns, recommendations, and treatment plan. Your skin will be cleansed prior to the procedure. This is a non-surgical treatment and does not require anesthesia.

How long does a Dysport treatment take?

Injections can be performed on average in about 15 – 20 minutes.

Does a Dysport treatment hurt?

Dysport injectables fall at a 1 on the pain scale on a pain scale of 1 to 5. (1 – least pain; 5 – most pain.)

Is there downtime after a Dysport treatment?

There is minimal to no downtime. You may resume your daily activities or return to work after receiving a Dysport treatment.

Mild redness or bruising may occur at injection sites. Redness will typically resolve within 30 minutes to one hour. Bruising may last for several weeks. Mild soreness may be present lasting hours to days. Severe reactions rarely occur, but a comprehensive review of your medical history, medications, history of reactions should be discussed with your provider to minimize that risk.

We do recommend a two-week minimum separation from special events to avoid the presence of bruising.

How long until I notice a difference with Dysport?

Dysport typically will start to take effect at 4 to 5 days post-injection.

How long will results from a Dysport treatment last?

Dysport results typically last approximately 2.5 to 4 months but may last shorter or longer. Repeated treatments will be necessary for continued effect.

How much does Dysport treatment cost?

The cost is highly variable. Each unit cost of Dysport varies based on the discretion of the service provider. Dysport treatments are priced according to the number of units used during the procedure. The amount of Dysport each patient will need differs based on the number of facial areas treated and the strength of each targeted facial muscle. Pricing may range based on units used and your desired outcome.

Are there contraindications for using Dysport?

Do not receive a neuromodulator treatment if you:

  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients in Dysport
  • Had an allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product such as Myobloc®, Botox, or Xeomin
  • Have a skin infection at the planned injection site
  • Are pregnant or nursing
  • Have autoimmune disorders (discuss with your provider)
  • Have a disease that affects your muscles and nerves (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease], myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome)

Will I receive Dysport post-care instructions?

Yes, you will receive full post-treatment instructions from your provider. We encourage patients to use the muscles more for the first hour or so after injection as this may help maximize the effects of the medication.

Please contact us immediately if you experience significant bruising, pain, or any other problems.
